Trading Standards Officers Issue Warnings
12th Nov 2009
Commercial landlords who have ignored changes in the law regarding Energy Performance Certificates(EPC's) are being targeted in a swoop by Cornish Trading Standards.
Following a 'desktop survey', officers from the local authority compiled a list of 120 commercial properties without the correct Certification, that are being marketed by the local press in the county.

Landlords who do not comply with the rules face a fine of upto £5000 based on the rateable value of the building, however during this crack down Trading Standards officers intend to contact landlords and sellers who are marketing without an EPC and issue a 28-day warning first.

Cornwall Trading Standards officer, John Tutchier, said: "There appears to be a trend for delaying the provision of an EPC until the last possible opportunity or, in some cases, for not providing one at all.  Not having an EPC and marketing a property for sale or rent is against regulations, and landlords who do so will be served with a penalty notice.
National Energy Rating can report that across the country increased activity by Trading Standards is leading to more warnings and penalty fines being issued by the relevant authorites.  To avoid these penalty measures contact National Energy Rating to discuss your Energy Certification needs and the most cost effective way of complying with them.
